Hawaiian Islands

This Envisat radar image features six of Hawaii’s eight major volcanic islands. Visible from right to left are the Big Island of Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Oahu. In addition to two other major islands, there are also 124 islets. This image was created by combining three Envisat ASAR acquisitions (March 27, 2006, April 16, 2007 and Jan. 21, 2008) taken over the same area. The colors in the image result from variations in the surface that occurred between acquisitions.

Just the saw the International Space Station swoosh over New York at 9:27p (just as a NASA txt indicated - estimated time was 9:51p) looked like a bolide (fireball), this is the second time I see this in person but it never ceases to be awesome. Keep looking up guys :D

While getting footage for a program about kayaking in Hawaii, Alexandre Socci followed professional kayakers Pedro Oliva, Ben Stookesberry, and Chris Korbulic as they attempted to get all kayak-y up in the fiery wrath of active volcano Kilauea, off the southeast slope of Mauna Loa. Alexandre remarked that the shots were incredibly hard to get due to their impending doom, their safety constantly threatened by boiling hot waters and errant magma coals, in fact several of the actual kayaks emerged from the carnage pocketed with newly-formed, smoldering craters. Definitely something majority of humanity should not attempt on their own, though if you’re certified EXXXTREEEEME, then why haven’t you already done this naked?
