World Domination- Joey Bada$$ (Produced by MF Doom)
Money Trees- Kendrick Lamar
(Source: Spotify)
Though Kendrick Lamar starts “Backseat Freestyle” by comparing himself to Martin Luther King, Jr., this new single from good kid, m.A.A.d. city is less voice-of-a-generation than it is a challenge to other rappers— specifically, try and keep up. The song, which features jabbering production from Hit-Boy, is the kind of technical showcase that launched Kendrick to the top of everyone’s list last year. The way he structures this track is particularly clever; there’s a hook, but because the beat is consistent throughout, it’s less of an energy amplifier than a place for the listener to catch their breath, since oxygen is something Kendrick never seems to need. When he reaches the third verse, he starts growling, larynx contracting in an aural reflection of the dominance on display.

About That Life- Diplo Ft. Jahan Lennon
Diplo’s last full solo album was 2004’s Florida. Since then, he’s been a bit distracted: remixes, production work for everyone under the sun, Major Lazer, Blackberry commercials, running a record label.
But now, Diplo has another solo album in the works, which he describes as ”psychedelic Southern gospel.” It’s a somewhat apt pegging of his new single, “About That Life”, which features vocals from Jahan Lennon (ex-Popo). The track is being released via Diplo’s labelMad Decent’s Jeffree’s imprint tomorrow.
The Don- Nas
A new single from Nas surfaced today on the blog for Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex (via Nah Right). The track features production by late hip-hop icon Heavy D, who Nas says “gave this beat to [co-producer Salam Remi] for me to rap to.” Production duo Da Internz (Ludacris, Big Sean, Rihanna) also worked on the track.

Don’t Fight The Feeling- Harriet
Everyone should download our buddy’s brilliant EP Tell the Right Story.
The press release for the EP said it was inspired by classic storytelling and movies. What specifically inspired you?
AC: I think I’m a musician and a songwriter because that’s what I’ve been doing my whole life, but I think my first love is the movies. In terms of songwriting, I think I’m extremely influenced by screenwriters and dialogue almost more than poetry. I think I like music that, when you’re driving, makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger than the drive.
Good luck at SXSW this year my friend!
Loving the new Sleigh Bells single. Hardcore BK electronic rock. These have been some of the loudest shows I have ever been to. Can’t wait for the album.
“Born to Lose,” which just debuted on Zane Lowe’s radio show, won’t disappoint anyone who cottoned on to the duo’s penchant for distorto guitar riffs and bruising beats, as Krauss coos over a high volume assault. But the fact that you can actually hear her dreamy vocal lines clearly, and that the song has a brief guitar breakdown and ringing coda suggest that the Brooklyn band might be headed down some new paths onReign, which comes out in February.
Runnin’- Azealia Banks and Lunice
Azelia Banks is a 19 year old MC from Harlem. With a razor sharp flow, she is posed to blow this year. Playing a surprise show tonight in NYC for CMJ…
- A timeline feature on tumblr would be an awesome addition. A more creative way to quickly scroll through an individual's log of posts. Would be an interesting way study trends, across the board, overtime. Could see some interesting custom CSS evolutions if users had access to high speed backlog scroll.
PAPA in NYLON

We’ve had Los Angeles band PAPA on repeat ever since we first got a taste of their rich, high-flying sound a few weeks ago in Good Listener. And now that Darren Weiss and Daniel Present have officially hit the road on tour with fellow Californians Girls (Weiss is also their drummer), we met with the guys to find out what this new project was all about.
Darren and Danny visited the NYLON office and filled us in on PAPA’s beginnings, dealing with no sleep, and-yep- even indoor skydiving. Plus, get a first listen of their brand new single below!
